Chemin historique du Berbegal

HISTORIC ROUTE
Departure point:  Berbegal; lineal route.
Level: Easy
Duration: 3 hours
Recommendations: Take drinking water and wear suitable footwear.
Points of interest: Traditional Romanesque and Gothic architecture; a section of a Roman road and the Santiago Way; viewpoints.

This route allows a brief journey through the history of the south of Somontano as walkers are taken back to ancient Roman times and experience echoes of distant medieval centuries.
In the villa of Berbegal there are a number of impressive ancestral homes such as the current Town Hall and vestiges of ancestral traditions can be seen throughout.  The village boasts splendid views along the “Senda del Meridiano” (meridian path) and is also a good place to stop for a meal or a drink.
The town has an interesting church dedicated to Santa Maria la Blanca. It was commissioned in the early years of the 12th century and was originally planned as a grand temple with three apses and three naves topped by barrel vaults.  However, building work stopped and did not commence again until the end of the 12th century.  The building was hastily finished with just one section, which was eventually finished with a pointed barrel vault
The tympanum of the church facade has six archivolts and displays the holy trinity chrismon with the Pantocrator and Tetramorphs (Evangelist symbols.)  The porch tower corresponds with the emergence of the Gothic architectural style in Somontano.
The chapel of Santa Águeda was constructed at the end of the 12th century and has a single nave with a barrel vault and a semi-circular apse covered with a quarter-sphere vault.  In the 18th century the foundations were extended to incorporate a new facade.
