DAVID GÓMEZ ROUTE
While this particular route was being developed in the spring of 2005, the naturalist, David Gómez Samitier passed away.  He was a passionate and well-respected naturalist, an expert in the pre-Monegros area, and an enthusiastic promoter and feisty defender of Aragonese natural resources.
Recommendations: Comfortable clothes and suitable shoes, preferably walking boots.
Cap and cagoule.
Food and drinking water.
Camera and binoculars.

The route has 3 possible variations:

  1. Educational.  A pleasant and easy route suitable for all, taking in the splendid views from the Chapel of San Bartolomé.  See first-hand how our ancestors lived and discover new ways to identify birds and plants.
  2. Short.  By carrying on from the educational route the visitor has an opportunity to make out the distinct rock formations of the landscape as well as discovering the difference between the plains and the banks of the Alcanadre River.
  3. Long.  Complete the learning experience and learn about nature from the observation house.

Torres de Alcanadre is located at 389 metres above sea level on the left bank on the river that gives it its name.  It enjoys an enviable position with magnificent panoramic views.

This area to the south of Somontano is known as “pre-Monegros” due to its proximity to the desert-like Los Monegros region.  The flat landscape that surrounds the village holds many surprises; distinctive areas of sandstone, vertical cliffs and ledges and scatterings of stone monoliths.
The distinctive sandstone and loam shapes reveal an unusual relieve of terraced arena-like formations and stone towers as well as other extraordinary geological shapes such as the “Fairies’ Chimney,” saucepan-like craters and honeycombed walls.
However, this route is also a journey into a peaceful corner of the region between forests of thicket and the river, and between plateaus and cultivated plains.  Birds that visit this area include the griffon vulture, the buzzard, red kites, cormorant, coots, crag martins and bee-eaters.
